Helsinki Metropolitan Area at MIPIM 2016: Growing fast, Connecting fast

At HELSINKI–FINLAND stand in MIPIM 2016 March 15–18, in Cannes, France, are represented the Metropolitan Cities Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa as well as the cities of Turku and Tampere together with the corporate partners Senate Properties, Skanska, SRV Group Plc and YIT.

Helsinki metropolitan area is in the middle of an ambitious transformation. The well-reachable area is one of the fastest growing metropolises in Europe.

By 2050, the population of the Helsinki Region will increase from the current 1,400,000 to over 1,800,000. In the next two decades, dozens of billions will be invested in smart construction and an even more effective urban transportation system. 2015 saw the opening of the Ring Rail Line, which provides direct access to the Helsinki Airport. The western metro connection will be launched this year.

The Helsinki metropolitan area is attractive to international investors and businesses, because it provides the perfect mix of economic, social and ecological sustainability. The openness of business and administration – and society as a whole – is a key element in Helsinki. Helsinki is also a forerunner in energy efficiency and a strong hub for start-up activities. Helsinki offers an open and flexible operational environment, where the population is well educated.

Helsinki is a city that encourages open democracy; the City has, for instance, an open data interface which provides free access to the information concerning the City’s decision making, procurements and expenditure. The City is actively deploying Service Design tools to re-energise its operations and services.

A major development area in Helsinki and in a state of rapid change, the Pasila–Vallila–Kalasatama Axis of Growth is where the centre of Helsinki is expanding, three kilometres north of downtown. These dynamic commercial, business and residential hubs will transform metropolitan Helsinki, while preserving the uniquely human scale of downtown.
